Tooth Pain Management

Tooth pain Management

Proper diagnosis and treatment by a dentist are essential for resolving the underlying cause of tooth pain and preventing further issues.

Immediate Relief

  • Ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin) or Acetaminophen (Tylenol) can help reduce pain and inflammation.

  • Apply a cold pack or ice wrapped in a cloth to the outside of your cheek for 15-20 minutes to numb the area and reduce swelling.

  • Rinse your mouth with warm saltwater (1/2 teaspoon of salt in 8 ounces of warm water) to clean the area and reduce inflammation.

  • Over-the-counter gels or ointments containing benzocaine (like Orajel) can provide temporary numbness.

  • Keep your head elevated while lying down to reduce blood pressure in the painful area, which can alleviate some discomfort.

When to See a Dentist

  • Persistent Pain: If your tooth pain persists for more than a couple of days despite home treatment.

  • Severe Pain: If the pain is severe and unmanageable with over-the-counter medications.

  • Swelling or Fever: These can be signs of an infection that requires professional treatment.

  • Visible Damage or Decay: If you notice visible cavities, cracks, or other damage to your teeth.

  • Difficulty Swallowing or Breathing: This could indicate a more serious infection spreading.

How To Take Care During Dental: Brush your teeth twice a day with fluoride toothpaste. Floss regularly. Visit your dentist routinely for a checkup and cleaning. Tell the dentist about any medical conditions you have and medications you take. Eat a well-balanced diet. Quit smoking. Smoking increases your risk for gum disease.

When To Visit your Doctor? Changes in mood and sudden confusion can occur with mental health issues as well as physical conditions, such as an infection or drug interaction. Watch out for trouble thinking or focusing, irregular sleeping patterns, and feelings of anxiety or depression.
